DESCRIPTION:
Waltham Girandole case, with the number 19, and bearing an original mov't [no extra holes] signed E. Howard & Co, nickel plated and with maintaining power, 8-day, weight, C.1927
CONDITION:
well this came from a NH Estate and both the owner and his son felt this was an original Waltham, however the movement is clearly signed E. Howard & Co. This is a quality Howard movement (with maintaining power) C.1925, that is often found in the Howard No. 95, and with typical Howard pendulum. Case throat has a proper silvered brass thermometer, signed Taylor. The original Waltham signed dial is crazed and starting to flake, but is still very nice. About 60% of the original case gilding is intact; areas that flaked were touched up with gold paint. One ball is missing from lower bezel. We have spoken with knowledgeable folks that have studied Waltham, and although there is a general acknowledgement that there were some shared cases and or movements as the companies began to struggle, it is not possible for us to state categorically that this clock is proper. There have been other examples of Waltham cases with Howard movements {one in today's sale also}, We only know for sure that Mr. Moodie acquired the clock about the time that Amoskeag Company took over the final Waltham inventory, and that it has been in one place until 2010.
